Roda Golf Hotel and town centre
« on: January 12, 2009, 06:31:28 PM »
Hello

Just read about some building work drawing to a halt on some of the Polaris sites.

Anyone know if it is similar with Roda?

regards

Leona

Well Phase 5 at Roda has been put on indefinite hold and it looks as if the hotel is also on hold at the moment, though there is talk that the proposed commercial centre may be started soon. Calidona are not too good with information but you could always ask them if you are awaiting your property to be built.

Good thing the golf course and most of the residential build has been completed.

Latest release on Calidona website re the DeVere Hotel at Roda Golf. I am not surprised concerning this though:

"The Directors of Calidona and De Vere Hotels have reached an agreement to delay until 31st December 2009 the decision  of commencement works to construct the hotel at Roda Golf & Beach Resort which is to be managed by De Vere

The delays by the administrative authorities  in  granting  licence  authorisations  have prevented the commencement of works until this time when we find ourselves in the context of International economic & financial  uncertainty  which  creates  problems  for  any decisions of investment and in particular the difficulty of  securing  financing  not only within Spain but in every surrounding country.

In this sentiment both parties understand that to guarantee the future success of the hotel it is necessary to wait until a degree of normality  returns to the general situation of the market and then go ahead firmly with the project and the  intention of maintaining the excellent relations that exist between both parties and with the mutual conviction that this strategic alliance will deliver strong medium term satisfaction and demonstrate further commitment to the distinct resorts of Calidona within Spain.

To demonstrate the excellent collaboration between both parties we are pleased to communicate that Calidona Rentals and Services and De Vere are currently working to reach an agreement for clients of De Vere to enjoy holidays at Roda Golf & Beach Resort via residential golf and apartment rental packages."

Thanks for this info Sandra - as you say, it comes as no surprise.  I can't say I blame them for putting this off again because of the current situation, but if they had got their act together earlier this may possibly have been avoided.  I personally am more bothered about the commercial centre being started, as it would be so much more appealing to visitors (and of course owners) if they had a choice of restaurants etc. (not to mention being able to buy a pint of milk or a bottle of wine on site).

Hi Jane

I agree but my biggest gripe is that although we have the beach club at the end of La Manga, if you wanted to use some leisure facilities or as you say a pint of milk or a bottle of wine you have to beetle off resort to Consuma or Mercadona (not a great imposition) but it would be nice just to walk to the shop or go a cafe for a coffee or a glass of wine, or dine in (not at the Club House) or use the spa etc.  I do feel a little let down by Roda on the lack of these particular facilities.

But what really annoys me is that Calidona are competing with their own customers for rentals and using their marketing might to attract clients.

I have been told that is almost definite that the commercials will start to be built mid summer so we shall see if that is true.  If so, it will be a big help with our own marketing for rentals and let's hope they put in a couple of cafe's and restaurants as well as the spa etc.

Hi Sandra,

It was my understanding that the commercial centre build start was imminent, i.e. January, with a view to completing by the end of the year, but I guess as we've waited this long we can wait a few more months.  Fingers crossed!!

Hi All

I actually wrote to Roda Golf today and got a reply very quickly from Ana Escribano , the Client Services Manager.  She confirmed that they have the permission for the commercial centre and that they are "closing with the suppliers" (presume they mean building contractors) and that they will start asap.  She also said that the tennis courts etc. were part of the hotel complex.  I replied to her that this was certainly not how the resort was sold to us and that were never given the impression that the tennis courts etc. were separate facilities.  She said she was going back to the management with that point of view and would get back to me.

So, if it starts sooner rather than later then that's good.  Fingers crossed!

I think you may find that the Spa facilities were also part of the hotel build. After all they would be trying to attract guests at the hotel and I doubt there would be enough demand from owners or renters.

Tennis Courts are however something different as very little outlay would possibly bring in a decent amount of business and compliment the excellent golfing facilities.

Bear in mind though that even La Manga Club with superb tennis facilities and 3 golf courses has had to go cap in hand to the banks and ask for voluntary liquidation, so making a return is still difficult even before the credit crunch hit.

It seems to me that this is a Catch22 situation: reduced facilities=insufficient visitors/insufficient visitors=reduced facilities being built.  I think Hugh-man may be right about the Spa, but the commercial centre and tennis courts would of course attract additional business and make it easier for us to market our properties, but we need them sooner rather than later.  On the positive side, although many of us are annoyed at what is happening, if the commercial centre is on a par with the golfing facilities and clubhouse, it should an excellent product.

Thanks for keeping us posted Sandra.

Look what I received this morning from Ana Escribano - sounds like good news to me:

"Dear Mr. Mrs. Blakey,

It is with great pleasure that we would like to inform you of some exciting new developments that will be unfolding at Roda Golf & Beach Resort in the near future.

Firstly, we are improving access to the golf course, shop and restaurant, by commencing work on a brand new easy-access parking area conveniently situated next to the putting green and hole 9.

Alongside the new parking area, work is about to get underway on the construction of our new sporting facilities, which on completion will enable you to enjoy tennis and paddle tennis on dedicated courts, as well as a range of sports including basketball and five-a-side football on the new multi-sports court. Located opposite the hole 7 lake in a private lot within the complex, these new facilities are expected to be completed by this summer.

In addition, we are currently in the final stages of negotiation with a number of partners with regard to construction of the new shopping centre and work is expected to begin in the coming months.

For more information about any of the projects listed above, please don’t hesitate to contact our Customer Services team.

You can find this information and the hotel information in our web.

Best wishes,

Ana Escribano
