Level crossing replaced with "safer" bridge
Part of the railway line between Chinchilla and Cartagena was removed last week, as a level crossing was taken away, with the aim of making the crossing a safer place for both cars and pedestrians. The Council for Public Works, Housing and Transport has invested more than 2 million euros in the changes.
A new bridge, constructed in the area of Torre Pacheco near Balsicas, now means that vehicles and pedestrians can avoid the crossing. Present at the removal of the level crossing on the C3319 were the Councillor for Public Works, Housing and Transport, José Ballesta, Government Delegate Ángel González, the Mayor of Torre Pacheco Daniel García and the General Manager of Transport and Highways Carmen Sandoval.
The budget for the project was 2.184 million euros. The removal of the crossing forms part of an overall plan to reduce the number of level crossings on the roads, in an agreement from November 2001. The new and better crossing has 2 lanes of 3.5 metres wide, allowing vehicles to pass in both directions. As a further safety measure, there are verges and barriers at the side of the bridge. The pedestrian walkways are 2 metres wide. The whole bridge is 20m in length, and underneath will be a green area.
On both sides there will also be a one way "via de servicio", allowing vehicles to change direction, and giving access to the local fincas. During the inauguration, Sr. Ballesta stated that "safety is the most important factor, and this has led to the removal of the level crossing in a zone of growth such as Tore Pacheco".The Reporter Newspaper CB
