Great restaurant experience in Cartagena
« on: April 30, 2009, 11:22:43 PM »
I know that a lot of people ask me for recommendations as to where to eat in Cartagena and as lovely as the city is there doesn't seem to be many good city centre restaurants. Tonight we ate in Juglar Mudo which is owned by Guillermo who formerly managed the Roda Golf Clubhouse and he is ably supported by Rodrigo who worked in both the Clubhouse and the Beach Club.
The Juglar Mudo restaurant is in the Plaza del Rey which has an excellent underground carpark right beside it and can also be accessed by walking along the Calle Mayor and turning left onto the Plaza which is opposite the Arsenal (just about halfway up the Calle Mayor where Yves Rocher store used to be). The food was first class - we had the garlic prawns to start, steaks for main course and fabulous Tiramisu for dessert. Fabulous food and great value. The service was excellent and I highly recommend this restaurant for a great night out in the city.
Perhaps a restaurant review facility on the Forum would be helpful for owners and their renters or family and friends as I certainly appreciate knowing where to eat when I am out and about.
Parking can be accessed by following the road past the port and on towards the city centre and it is just underground opposite the old naval buildings which are being renovated.

Hi Happy Lady
Do you have any recommendations near to Roda? We have tried El Patio, La Tropical and most of the Balneario restaurants. We also like Terra Mare (?) on the beach at Los Alcazares.

Have you tried Ramon, which I think has just been refurbished, or La Amazora (?) in Rosalita and do you know of any other local 'hidden gems'?

Thanks

You obviously now have Campbells in Roda Village close to home, very new so unsure of food reputation.
Encarnacion Restaurant, part of the very old hotel on the sea front in the old town of LA is great for special occasions and has live music outside in the summer.
Ramons was very good last year with great tapas and nearby is El Chato for tapas and meals, younger crowd, great service.
Roblemar near the Oasis arch has a good reputation but not one of my personal favourites.
Amazora or however it is spelt is well liked but I believe can be pricey.

Hopefully Happy Lady has some other suggestions

Good to see the forum is being used to provide information and thanks to Happy Lady for starting this thread -whenever we come to Roda we always make time to visit Cartagena but have never found a decent restaurant, so Juglar Mudo will be on our 'to visit' list.

El Patio 2 is our personal favourite but I'd like to know if anyone has tried El Patio 1?  Can also vouch for Encarnacion Restaurant and Ramon's, both have great food and atmosphere and are popular with the locals.  Angela's Italian Restaurant down at the bottom of El Balneario is also very good.  I hadn't heard of Campbells so will give that a try, it's good to hear of somewhere closer to home opening.

Hi
Have always visited Catagena since we bought but also struggled to find a good restaurant.

Would also like to bring to the fore, a lovely "artisan" type market at the dock at Cartagena.  Parking is also very handy, below.

On sale lovely products, fresh cheeses, hams, olives and artichokes.  Handmade jewellery and crafts were lovely.  The most beautiful pine nuts freshly roasted in honey.  There is also a lovely cake stall, but be warned, we paid 14 euros for some gorgeous chocolate cake and apple cake.  Lush!! but very expensive as the size of both was the size of 1/2 sandwich cake (1/4 each)!

We visited on Good Friday so I imagine it is held every Friday.  I hope so as we intend to visit next time.

It is a lovely change to the markets we are used to in LA.

I am happy to oblige on restaurant recommendations as I really enjoy eating out and exploring the area. My personal favourites are Hotel Encarnacion - for al fresco lunch - scallop salad is not only gorgeous but looks fabulous as well. Tapas are great there also and the view from the terrace is beautiful.
La Almazara in Santa Rosalia - great starters (big enough to share) from 7 or 8 euro, main courses from 10 euro - steaks are fabulous and cost around 18 euro, desserts 5 euro - a really gorgeous restaurant with a lovely terrace and great wine list. Service is excellent and ambiance very congenial. I don't know where the pricey reputation comes from as our usual bill is under 70 euro with wine, pre dinner drinks and brandy with our coffees.
Collados de Roda- new clubhouse owners - do fantastic tasting menu at 35 euro a head which although a little pricey - perfect for a special occasion and includes three starters each plus a salad, one main course and two desserts, we had beef carpaccio, scallops, foie gras and with salmon salad then fillet steaks and creme brulee and cheese foam. All served nice and slowly over a good 2 hours with a nice bottle of vino and some complimentary sweet wine with one of the starters and a dessert wine. Bill was 83 euro including wine and water and owners discount. Not for every day but just for something different. They also have a fantastic golfer's menu of the day which includes an apertivo, salad, starter, main course with choice of one of two fish dishes and two meat dishes and dessert with glass of wine or beer for 17 euro. Unbeatable value for choice and freshness of food and both menus are based on the best and freshest ingredients on the day.
Casa Reloj (Clock House) in San Pedro is also excellent and has a good value Italian restaurant at the front and a nicer and slightly pricier Spanish restaurant behind.
Restaurante Ramon is brilliant for steaks and seafood and reasonable value.
El Chatto is great and newly refurbished. Brilliant range of tapas which we have to share for starters and great steaks and fish, baked cheese is the best I have ever had and is served with their own cheese biscuits and preserves. Highly recommended and very good value.
For takeaway pizzas try La Sombra just under the arch at Los Narejos - opposite Roblemar - pizzas from 4.50 euro - full size and great salads and chips to takeaway also.
We just found a great new Chinese Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada which is called the Happy Garden and is a wooden fronted building on the main street. Menu del dia from 8 euro which includes a starter -3 soups to choose from or a spring roll, main courses ranging from sizzling dishes beef terryaki, chicken with garlic, King Prawn with Chinese Veg all served with choice of chips, rice or noodles and icecreams for dessert. With half a bottle of vino included per person. Four of us went last week and the bill was an incredible 32 euro. Great food and lovely restaurant with very good service. We will return!!!
La Sal at Hotel Thalassia is great for a real treat and the buffet at the other restaurant there is also fabulous and great value at 18 euro a head.
That should keep everyone eating for a while and I will post some more as I think of them and keep the research ongoing.

Hello all. Just back from 5 lovely days at Roda. Would like to repeat the positive review of Juglar Mudo, and thank Happy Lady for bringing it to our attention. It was lovely seeing the boys again, I think they're very happy in their new venture (not quite Southampton, though!) and the food was superb. Good wine list, and sensible prices. Looking forward to a return visit.

Hi Murray

Just saw your post and If you want a babysitter then let me know.  My sister in law knows Roda very well, is a qualified Staff Nurse (ex Frimley Park) and was a Matron of a large school in Fleet for 14 years and has 2 grown up children and grandchildren.  She is setting up a babysitting/home nursing care service and would welcome any enquiries from any of our members.

Just pm if you are interested.  I will also reply to your email later today.

Re the restaurants - I am sure El Patio down the road opposite the 525 would be an ideal place for you to take your children and they would love it in there too.

Best regards
Sandra

Hi Murray

The Clubhouse is very child friendly with a lot of young Spanish children there with family at the weekends especially and they are well looked after.
Sandra is correct as El Patio is also very good for children and the massive barbecue at the back of the room certainly interests the younger children as does the fish counter. Most Spanish restaurants are very child friendly and we have had friends with children who have gone with us to El Patio, La Almazara and the Clubhouse and there were children's menus available everywhere and most waiters will allow children to share or half any adult main course.
If you are having a lazy day and want a takeaway the Clubhouse provides a takeaway service for most of their bar menu eg spaghetti bolognese, burgers, pizza, salads, chips etc and you can phone across and pick it up in fifteen minutes. Also great fish and chips from Frydays in San Javier (beside Mercadona) which is five minutes away if you take the back road. Hope that this is helpful and have a good holiday.

Just back from another pleasant stay at Roda but sadly did not get a chance to try Juglar Mudo but will definitely fit it in next time.

As an update, Campbells is still prooving very popular with people being turned away on a couple of nights in May many Roda Owners seem to be giving it a try.

Sadly a group of us had a set meal at the clubhouse which was rather indifferent and put a few off of going there again.
It is only my opinion and others may find a different experience but it seems that Collados are catering very much for the Spanish clientele, which is fine as we are in Spain but bearing in mind 50% of owners are non Spanish they should not forget a potentially lucrative market out of the summer season.

For good value lunches, menu del dia at 9.50 euros and great views Terre Mare on the seafront is good for cheap and cheerful.

In response to Hugh Man's comments I was in the Casa Club tonight and had the Golfer's Menu again to check it out following his dissappointment. I had the Golf Menu and it was truly excellent although the price has increased to 20 euro a head which with owner's discount is still very reasonable. We had an appetiser of Pork and peppers with Stuffed Mussels accompanied by warm Bread, then a Large Salad to share with large prawns, followed by Gazpacho or Vichyssoise, for the main course I had Merluza (Hake) and my other half had the pasta, desserts of Chocolate Tarta with three other choices and a drink of either wine or beer. It was honestly excellent and considering that the Merluza on its own is 18 euro a bargain.
I enquired about any other set menu and there is none but possibly Hugh Man you were with the golfer's group who (I understand from a friend who was in that group) negotiated a cheaper menu at 15 euro and the courses and choices were somewhat limited. For a few euros more and with resident's discount it would probably have been worth the additional three euro for the five courses and choices on the golf menu but hindsight is wonderful.
I was speaking to a group of four new owners on Roda tonight and they had the tasting menu at 35 euro (on the recommendation of other owners who had it on Saturday night) and said it was the best meal they have had in years.
So opinions will vary but to be fair to Collados the golf menu and tasting menu at current prices are great value and the added bonus is that you have no taxis to pay for and can walk home. The owner and management are very appreciative of business from the residents on Roda and we have regularly been offered complimentary digestifs, brandies and even the odd complimentary bottle of wine now and again. I don't work for Collados nor do I have any connection with them but in the interests of fairness it is important that forum readers understand what the golf menu includes and I stand to be corrected by Hugh Man but I don't think that we are comparing the same thing when we talk about the set menu but perhaps I am wrong and you did have the five course golf menu. I am sure that you will let us know.

Still very Happy Lady

We have just returned from Roda, the clubhouse was very enjoyable, food and drink was a reasonable price. The tapa's was excellent and only 3 euros a dish with the bread included. I was expecting high prices for drinks but again 3 euro for a beer was great value. The free wifi was excellent as we took our laptop this time.

We ate one night at Campbell's but as we were running low on cash were going to use the credit card but the facility was not set up, we had to limit what we could eat! The food was good and the staff were great with the kids.
