RECORD car rental - through DO YOU SPAIN
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:03:14 PM »
We rented a car over Easter through 'Do you Spain', and for the first time ended up with a car through 'record' rent a car. :(
The service we received compared to Gold or Auriga Crown was very poor. They tried to charge us 4 euros per day additional insurance, otherwise a charge to our credit card of 300 euros for a 5 day visit was tried to be forced upon us which we totally declined - this did happen to friends of ours who unfortunately when the rate went down last week, were charged 300 euros deposit, and only 278 euros equivalent was credited back to their card !!!!
My husband waited in the queue at Alicante airport 'Record desk' for over 45 minutes, then to be told no keys were available at the desk, and he had to go to the office in the car park for the keys. We waited here for nearly 1 hour to receive our car >:(. There were others waiting here who also told of the excessive insurance charges, and also the extra long wait for a car, and their total dissatisfaction compared to the other companies they have used in the past.
Will be more careful when we book again as to which organisation our voucher states.

Janice,

You can book directly with either Goldcar or Aurigacrown using this link:

http://www.spain-carhire.com/

'Touchwood' but I have always had good service with Goldcar.

Hi Janice,

I have paid a a 300 Euro deposit on the last two cars I've hired with Auriga Crown. The insurnace thing just seems to be a way of extracting the extra cover out of people, as when asked for a 300 Euro deposit most people give in and pay up. It looks like all of the companies are now following suit...

The problem is, when you book through an agent, you cannot specify which car hire firm you end up with.

This isn't just a Spanish thing but it is quite normal to take a deposit on insurance which happens to me regularly when I rent in the UK from Budget, Hertz and Europa Car, again between 300 - 500 pounds because what you get with the daily addition charge is cover for the excess if you have an accident which is your fault

In Spain, especially, if you are not a confindent driver, I suggest that this is money well spent because I hear so many stories of people getting bumped and having to pay for repairs

They credit this the same day I return the car

This isn't a problem because I use a UK credit card so I don't suffer any exchange rate variation or charges but if you use a UK card for a Euro transaction they will apply the rate on the day on booking and return so yes you could get less back

You have to secure cars with a credit card so unless you get a Spanish card, which are more difficult to obtain because they often want a deposit against your credit limit, you are exposed to the exchange rate variations

Used Goldcar for a number of years now.

No change to hiring conditions when used over Easter weekend.

No online booking fee, just hand in your booking receipt at airport reception.
No insurance deposit of 300 - 500 euros to pay.
Payment is what is displayed on booking form plus fuel and wheels & rims if you want it.

Insurance coverage
>Third party insurance
unlimited
>CDW Collision Damage Waiver
included
>Insurance excess
all cars without excess
>Theft and Fire Insurance
included
>PAI
personal accident insurance included
>Not included in Spanish and Portuguese car rental insurance
damage of tyres, wheels and rims, also undercarriage and glass
>Luggage
and personal possessions are not included in the insurance
>In case of an accident
if the vehicle is damaged, you must call the police and obtain a report for insurance

Tank filling (also note the GBCs)
The car will be delivered with a full tank of fuel. The cost for the gasoline is not included in the rental price and will be charged seperatly. The cost for the fuel and the refueling differ depending on the supplier. Exeption: for rental periods of 3 days or less it is possible to return the car with the rest fuel, the cost will then be refunded to your credit card.

Many thanks to all for replies. Maybe my friend and I were unlucky with Record over the Easter period, when I was out at end of February with Gold car, I had no increased insurance offered, or taken. It wasn't just the monetary side of things, it was also the excessive waiting time for the car. I go to Spain at least 6 times a year and never had the hassle of checking in twice with the waiting time I incurred even over Christmas, school holidays etc.

When I book again through Do you Spain I will request on the email booking page, not to use Record as for me it didn't work. :o

Hi All,

Anybody tell me the deal with Gold Car on their fuel policy. Seems like they charge you to fill the car and even if you take it back half full you are not allowed to fill it up to pay for what you have used. Also they will not give you a refund on fuel not used ??????

Can anyone enlighten me.

Regards

Col

If your stay is 3 days or less you can choose a FULL/FULL option, therefore getting a refund on the petrol you have not used as they refund the fuel cost you paid up front. If your stay is more than 3 days then you receive the car full and return it as near to empty as you can as there is no refund on remaining fuel. Make sure you specify at the desk which option you want.

Hi all,

I read on another forum, that due to the credit crunch in Spain, the hire companies cannot afford to replace their cars, and there is a shortage.

The shortage has resulted in some cases of an 80% increase in price.

Do not take this as fact, but it comes from a number of sources.

I think it is wise, that as soon as you have booked your trip, book your car. With most of the brokers, you can cancel without penalty, if you later find a better deal.

I feel even stronger now that we will buy one for use there.

Hi - just checked Doyouspain re car hire.  I had already booked for our trip in November and I always go back several times before our trips to check the price.  Today, the price has gone down 20 Euro since I made our initial booking - so top tip of today - is check your car hire price with whoever you have booked.

There is a comment on their website that car hire prices are going down - so that is good news  - perhaps they have cottoned onto the fact that people were simply not booking cars.  Let's hope the good news continues and car hire prices continue downwards.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi
Was recently at UGR
We hired large car from goldcar. Disgusted with fact that car was full of diesel and we were not given option to refill on returning. We used less than half tank but were not refunded any of the 100 Euro we were charged for fuel. How annoying is that. Wont be using goldcar again!

Hi

We always use Do You Spain for competitive car hire from San Javier Airport but we have also found Goldcar Rentals to be inflexible when it comes to their full / empty petrol policy.

When we book now through DYS we ask them to appoint Auriga Crown as their car hire agents. Even if the booking comes back with Goldcar a quick phone call to DYS and they will change the company for you. Claire Davis very helpful at DYS. Auriga Crown will do a half / half petrol policy so you only pay for what you use. Maybe not such a great choice of vehicles but certainly cheaper than Goldcar, particularly if you are only out for a short break.
